If you have a cactus plant and need help identifying it, this is the place to post it.

Cylindropuntia tunicata?

Post by Dalesmicro »

I bought this plant in Xochimilco this weekend. The whole plant is about 7 inches high and 14 inches in diameter. The sheaths come off easily. Is there anything except Cylindropuntia tunicata that has this kind of sheaths over the spines? Thanks!Image

I think you got it right, Dale.
Alot of Chollas have the papery sheaths, so can't use that for IDs.

The stems seem rather thick, despite it's size, although C. whipplei is very similar, but maybe not quite as thickly spined.

Is it a wild collected plant, or are the spines natural like that? Would make repotting quite a pain, literally.
Ill have it though :)

I don't know the presidence of the plant but it was covered with dirt etc. when I bought it so I think it has been growing outside and not in a green house, in which case the color of the coverings is probably staining. If it is important for the identification I can update the color when the new growth matures.
