That is very close-up! Is that green soil or is it algae growing there?

it's algae........it covers all my seed trays within a few days........but seems to do no harm.
i use cactus compost over which i put the seeds then sprinkle a fine coat of sand using a tea strainer
before the soil goes in i put in cotton wool with strands pulled out through the bottom holes this allows quick uptake of water by standing them in a tray of water.........i use rainwater at room temp (probably how the algae gets in)....seed trays go into an unheated propergator in the sunroom, to retain moisture and help maintain the correct temp for germination.

Sounds good. I am good at getting seeds to germinate, but after that -

Your seedlings are looking good hob, even with the green background.
I also have limited success germinating seeds

I cover the surface with small pebbles or large sand rocks after a couple of weeks to suffocate the inevitable green algae.
