Moving cacti to a brighter spot. (plenty pics.)

Post by hafezzahruddin »

I don't have a big backyard or side garden to build a greenhouse, but I am lucky that the climate is warm throughout the year.
What I wish to share is the work of moving my cacti collection to a sunnier spot at the back of my terrace house.

First of all I changed the awning shade to a transparent one. The function of shade is to avoid excessive rain.

I believe in using used wood, nails and screws. I built the racks using used wood.

The fun part was arranging all the cacti. And suddenly I feel that the collection are not so big as usual. I am trying hard not to ADD more cacti. At least not before April.Image

Notice my opuntia graft? (You might want to check my post in the grafting section). They are doing well, I can see new growth.

This is where I put seedlings and opuntia stock.

That is a nice set up. I like that you recycled!

Yeah, where are you located?

Anyway, I'm right there with you on scrap lumber - especially for plant shelving. The wood is going to get all kinds of dirt and water on it so there is no sense using brand new boards if you don't have to.

Brand new boards do look nice though :) My staging is made from pallets and some old flooring boards

I made quite a few shelves from leftover pallets that I got from work in CA. My current shelves are made from treated 2x4s from a deck that my brother tore out at a job site. They were replacing their wood deck with concrete. Nicest shelves I've built yet! 8)

Kevin,
I know! And I'm resisting the temptation to fill up the empty space with more cacti!

Harriet,
Thanks. I always recycle lumber. Can't afford brand new wood.

Iann,
Yep, brand new things always look nice. Nevertheless, you can make recycled lumber look new too - just repaint, etc.

Daivv,
I am from Malaysia, we have tropical climate here. Sunny, warm (34 degrees Celsius)and bright throughout the year. The catch is frequent downpour, which explains why I need the clear roof.

Nice set up you have there! and congrats on the 2 new plants. Soon the shelves will be filled up, and a new staging area must be made. Its a lovely cylce that repeats its self over and over until a spouse or loved one says enough is enough, then you order more lol.

I felt bad doing this but I couldn't resist buying them to fill up my new racks. My partner told me that I got too many cacti, but then again there is no such thing as having too many cacti.

I had to hide these cute fellas in the car until I was really assure that he is resting in the bedroom, then I sneaked them to the backyard quietly.

I don't know what this is. Had to tell partner that somebody gave this to me in order to avoid unnecessary discussion.

The succulent is Cremmosedum cv Little Gem, nice plant that is freezing in England and cold in California.
