Neko's Collection
Got another batch due in the post too, including one that I got for a friend... There's a fanatic in the making there!
I think my 'year-in' and 'year-end' pictures are going to make for an interesting contrast, at this rate

Carpe cerevisiam, carpe dementum, carpe solum!

Some more additions!
Echinocereus scheerii ssp. gentryi
Mammillaria bombycina (Is it possible to fall in love with a spine display? I'm 'hooked' )
Mammillaria spinosissima
I've told myself this is the last batch for now... but then I told myself that with the last order too!

Got home from work today, and went over to check my cacti out. Words do not describe the size of the grin on my face as I examined these four in particular:
Want a clue?
A. capricorne
M. bombycina
R. miniscula
O. macrocentra
The dog kicked the Opuntia over literally moments after that picture, resulting in it falling completely out of the pot, so I'll see if the buds survive that little trauma or not... But even so, I can't deny I'm excited by this first wave!
Incidentally, does anyone know if, with any of them, I could remove one flower and use it to pollinate another on the same plant? Or should I settle for just sitting back and enjoying the show?

Collection's definitely improving! 25-strong now, which - for about one year - isn't too bad, I feel~Tony wrote:I would not have been able to resist that one either.
Your collection is looking good.

Yeah; that was definitely part of what drew me in. I'm assuming that's where the newest spines are, though I'm sure someone can correct me if I'm wrong!king_hedes wrote:thats cool looks like it has a orange stripe down the middle

First flower of the year has arrived!
Also, I have a very happy Opuntia - can anyone tell me whether I should expect flowers or pads from these? (For what it's worth, I'm guessing pads~)
Many thanks in advance!

beautiful flower there! is that on your new m. bombycina?
I can't really tell if that'll be a bud or a pad, I'm guessing pads too...

With apologies to the late Professor C. D. Darlington the following misquotation springs to
mind ‘cactus taxonomy is the pursuit of the impossible by the incompetent’ - Fearn & Pearcy, Rebutia (1981)

Yup - and added joy; the half-open flower in the background of that picture opened properly about two hours later!StrUktO wrote:beautiful flower there! is that on your new m. bombycina?

With the spine display and the flowers, I think M. bombycina is rapidly becoming one of my favourites

Neko,
would guess that those are going to be pads. It can take an Opuntia up to a few years to get buds for flowers. However you can get flowers from them on the first year from cuttings if they were already going to have flowers. (I have a few that are flirting with flowers!)
Those new additions are nice. The cristate Mamm is nice.
I wouldn't have passed that up either!

Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
