Central AZ Cactus and Succulent Society Pics

Post by peterb »

I volunteered at the CACSS show and sale today and had a grand time. Admittedly, most of the 5 hour shift was spent talking with club members who are great plant fanatics and incredibly knowledgeable, as well as the inimitable Woody Minnich of Cactus Data Plants, a conversation with whom is like a graduate seminar. A customer asked "what's the difference between this Mammillaria ritteriana and M. chionocephela?" and Minnich provided instant details of spines, Fibonacci spirals, overall size, locality data and flower color variation. He also acknowledged they were synonyms, but the customer was sold anyway!

Here's Woody trying to find pics of the incredible orange flowering clumps of coccineus he found near Hatch on the way to Phoenix:

A couple Opuntia martiniana and a macrocentra in flower on the way into the DBG:

A very cool Adromischus:

An unusual and beautiful Ariocarpus hybrid, kotschoubeyanus v. elephantidens X fissuratus v. lloydii:

Labeled as Sclerocactus parviflorus, but I didn't realize they had yellow flowers?

Wonderful monstrose super clumping Epithelantha micromeris:

Incredible grafted Echinocereus ferreirianus lindsayi:

Uebellmannia pectinifera with nice little green flower:

Best cactus in show, Ferocactus chrysacanthus:

Gorgeous viridiflorus and trigloch inermis:

Neochilenia carneoflora:

spotless Dudleya gnoma:

Inspired Euphorbia abdelkuri:

Awesome Fouqueria macdougalii (L) and purpusii (right):

A very cool little Agave on the sale table, forget the species:

Nice Uebelmannia flavispina:

Just a few of the inspiring and humbling sights. I always learn so much going to shows! The skill on display is amazing. If you are a member of a club, you can actually ask the growers how they do it. :-)

Peter,
one of my goals for the next year once I get my job(which is a temp job for a few months) and then after we'll see.. I want to join the CACSS and also go to the next plant sale.
It seems you got to talk with really cool people. :)
Can't wait til I have some money!

Peter. You don't have to be a member to go to the meetings. You can always join later, but that doesn't mean you can't attend.

Great pics Peterb!

I think someone just crossed these so he could have the longest tag in the show!

And when you do join, $20 per year is really cheap when compared to the value that you'll get. Someone there would have known about those cute little agave plants for example.

Buck,
trust me. I will join, and then I wont have to bug everyone on here. hahaha or at least not as much. Oh and one other thing.... I know I could have gone, but I dont have very much money, like less then 50 bucks to my name at the moment, so it would have been bad if I did go! hahahaha
