Hob, welcome to the forum and glad to see you jump right on in! That is a form of Mammillaria elongata. If you've got some catching up to do on cacti, this is the place to do it!
All Cacti are succulents, but not all succulents are Cacti
thanks for the welcome.......i bought 10 plants in a sale at a local garden center......to add to the few i already had....they all seem to be mammillaria's of different types.....all without names.....looks like i need a trip to the id section
just bought another 10 named plants too.....and some packets of mixed seeds......also been given some plants from a man at work when he found out i was interested.....most are in a bad way, but i'm hoping to rescue as many as i can.

Hello fellow cactus growers,
this may be an odd question for you. Because I do not grow cacti in pots I had not even thought about it until I saw all these big clumps, which in a lot of instances were quite a bit larger in diameter than the opening of their pots.
My questions to you are: How do you water these kinds of plants? How do you handle them? and How do you keep the top-heavy plants from falling over?

Harald,
I think nobody is responding because there isn't anything different with those really. The water works down in-between the clumps. On pots that are top heavy, you just have to prop them up against the wall or next to other pots, etc.

When I posted my entry for contest#8, I mentioned that my first choice was taken by Daiv and my second by eduart. Then there was the proposed outlawing of 100MM macro lenses :-)
Just to share, here is my version of R. heliosa, as seen through a Canon 100 2.8 macro lens!!
