Best cacti to graft onto

Post by Cacti77 »

What are the best cacti to try grafting seed onto?

I had a graft of a Gymnocalycium bruchii pup onto a blue myrtle that was growing great until my cat knocked it over and the graft came off :(

I really want to get some grafts going since I have some nice seedlings growing at the moment.

I personally would say Pereskiopsis. Very easy to graft seedlings to it, and has a pretty good success rate. Blue mytrle's are great too, although I have never tried to graft seedlings to them, only pups.

This link doesn't cover all options but I found it useful. The only thing it lacks is a picture to have an idea of the stock size but you shouldn't have any problem finding that on the web.

Selenicereus is a great stock for Gymnos.

Pereskiopsis is excellent for seedlings but isn't good long term - you need to reroot or regraft. I'm experimenting with Opuntia humifusa and it's proving to be fairly good. As a long term solution it beats Hylocereus/Selenicereus/Myrtillocactus (for me, anyway) due to its better cold tolerance.
