That's a big looking Pediocactus. Have you ever been up there when they're in flower?

Nice Pedio and really wonderful photos all around.

I was really close to making an Idaho trip this year with a friend to do some exploring like that. Maybe next year. Your pics are motivating!

Love the field trips! Your photos are great, thanks for sharing them.

Hey, that sounds good. We'll get there eventually. I will contact you when we do - probably next year...

Pediocactus are found in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Montana, as well as most other states from the Rockies westwards (not California). Hardy :)

I love to go on Native Plant Society hikes. I go with the Nevada Plant Society all the time. Looks you went on a good one.
Around Northern Nevada, the only cactus I have come across are O. poly. erinacea and Grusonia pulchella. It would be really cool to find pedios on a high ridge. I think the closest habitat in the area is Steens Mountain in southern Oregon

If I understand correctly, Idaho pedios are up around Salmon, ID? From the staellite photos, that does indeed look like pedio country. Is that where your pics were taken?

John, Hochstaetter and others have pedio simpsonii way up in the northeast corner of nevada, in generally the Elko area, a bit farther northeast from the looks of it. Elko County.

PS- oops! I notice you clearly indicate the locale! I wasn't paying close attention, obviously. Just south of Twin Falls. Much farther south than some of the populations I had heard of from up around Salmon. Cool! Closer to Phoenix. :-)

The Pediocactus from the Salmon area are now considered P. nigrispinus var indraianus, in any case something var indraianus. They are quite separate geographically from the fairly standard P. simpsonii var simpsonii found in the south of Idaho.

There are Pediocactus in the mountains all over the east of Nevada except for the very southern tip. The ones in the far north and just into Oregon are a confusing bunch with a confusing bunch of names.
