help with Golden Prickly Pear (Opuntia basilaris var. aurea)

Post by comike »

Hello again!
Hopefully I have the name right, I call it a beavertail

Mine is in a pot.
I've done fair growing other prickly pears, but this growing season this one hasnt done much of anything..it has one new pad.

Heres my question...

Do beavertail opuntia have any special growing needs any of you are aware of? Or anything they particularly respond to?

Any tips on soil, watering, sun, etc?
Its not in any risk but I thought I would ask.

thanks, Co(lorado)Mike

Hello Mike :D

All I can think of is that maybe it has overgrown its pot, or maybe a change of soil could do some good. If it already grew a new pad that´s something good!

Here is a good link for your beavertail that could be helpful:

Can't think of any special needs for it. I grow it just like my other opuntias as far as soil and such.
I have found them to be slower growing in pots though.
