I'm looking to replace some long-suffering Nandina with some moderate-height (2-5 feet or so) cacti. They'll be in half a day's sun here in Tucson (hot and bright!!) and our winters typically bottom out in the low-mid 20s F; I'd prefer no protection required but I can do it easily if something is pretty enough. The space for the cacti is about 2x8; the rest of the bed has some Agave and Yucca.
Here are a couple ideas I've had:
Oreocereus celsianus - they've got a few 2-footers locally available.
Echinopsis hybrid(s) - are there any fat ones that don't fall over?
I'm trying to steer clear of the "typical" stuff down here; e.g. Pachycereus marginatus, P. schotti, C. peruvianus, etc. I like having the only cool plants on the street
