WANTED: Cleistocactus

Post by Minime8484 »

Hi all!
I have become enamored recently with plants in the genus Cleistocactus, and I have been trying to find sources of plants in the genus, especially those with multi-colored or non-red flowers (though, I'd love those too!).

However, I've not had much luck at all finding sources for plants other than the following:
Cleistocactus baumannii
Cleistocactus buchtienii
Cleistocactus hyalacanthus
Cleistocactus strausii
Cleistocactus winterii

Mesa Garden is the only place I can find that has several species beyond the above.

Are there any other places I should check besides MG? I've checked the usual suspects without luck.

Some of the species I am especially looking for are:
Cleistocactus candellia
Cleistocactus dependens
Cleistocactus micropetalus
Cleistocactus palhuyayensis
Cleistocactus plagiostoma

However, I'm open to others! :D

Would be willing to trade or buy.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Tristan

did you check with Corona Cactus?

I haven't checked what Darryl's current list is any time recently, but he's got tons of different cacti.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

Oh yeah - I can't go more than a week or two without checking their latest!! Their plants are great!
As a matter of fact, I just got an order from them last week....although Cleisto's weren't among them, and the only one on their list is C. strausii.

Cheers,
Tristan

ah ok. was worth a shot, I haven't checked in awhile. a severe lack of funds hurts. The few plants I can buy I usually get at the Desert Botanical Garden's gift shop. You should check it out if you haven't been there. You can get into the gift shop for free I think, or at least you could before.

I'm actually a volunteer at the DBG so am there almost weekly! :D

Just picked up a few goodies last week there as they had their annual Member Appreciation sale - 25% off everything, including plants! Couldn't resist.

oh, really cool. I might have seen you there. I am taking the DLS class.. we had our final today, for the first semester of class.

I am eventually going to volunteer there I think on saturdays. I just have been too tired lately to talk to them about it and sign up for the other class I need to take.

You'd surely recognize me...I'm the one with the load of plants in his arms!

The DBG can always use more volunteers for sure - applying is super easy - you can do it online at:

UPDATE: I am still looking for the many species I don't have, but I do now have the following:

Cleistocactus acanthurus
Cleistocactus baumannii
Cleistocactus buchtienii
Cleistocactus clavispinus
Cleistocactus ferrarii
Cleistocactus hildegardiae
Cleistocactus hyalacanthus
Cleistocactus peculiaris
Cleistocactus ritteri
Cleistocactus senilioides
Cleistocactus smaragdiflorus
Cleistocactus strausii
Cleistocactus tominensis
Cleistocactus winterii

And, I've found a source for C. candelilla & samaipatanus.

So, any besides those listed above I'd be very interested in obtaining! :D

Cheers,
Tristan

Yep! That's where I got mine...at the DBG!
The ones I've listed above are the ones I already have though!
You should definitely get one @ the DBG...there are only a couple left, and the DBG will be shutting down the plant shop soon (making that area into a restaurant).
