hobs topic 2012 (year 7)
I've been very busy the last few weeks, but still trying to keep an eye on things here too.
Well here we are again, another year another topic.
Its that time of year again, getting the timing right is always a problem...........when to move the protected plants from winter storage back to the greenhouses. Been a strange year this year...........record temps in march but too early to risk night frosts. early April is my usual move time but there is a cold front coming in from Greenland so I'm delaying for now. Last week I was running around wearing Tee shirt and jeans now I have got the coat and scarf out again
I did get the epi's out at the weekend and water them before returning them to the warmth of the conservatory as some were looking a bit shriveled from lack of water. The hardy ones have been out all winter but not watered yet as the combination of cold and wet soil is not good for them The recent warm weather has encouraged some of the plants to flower early, still in winter quarters. Meanwhile in greenhouse 2 I have pulled all the weeds from the ground bed and Trichocereus bridgesii is now 50 inches (1.27 m) tall But the support wire for Trichocereus spachianus broke over the winter leaving me with a 30 inch (760mm) cutting to dispose of Engine bits and water pumps are waiting on the floor and bench for the plants to move out so i can do some work on them during the summer, I need to have a pump running for a show in May Hurt my back the other day so now everything will have to wait anyway
Never mind, the clocks have changed and the nights are getting longer flowering season is almost upon us hopefully it will be another good year.

Love the 1st pic, Hobs! Has such an incredible plant "homey" feeling. My mediatation room is still buried under the winter "residents", but has same feeling! They also deaden sound a lot, so between being in the country & all the plants -- Very peaceful ! Of course all the plants look great! but it was the "feel" that struck me!

Hello hob,
I hope you are doing better already and also that your cactus collection is doing fine. I did notice those two columnar cacti (Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus (Echinopsis) spachianus. Are those fast growing specimens, and if so, when do you expect them to hit the ceiling of your conservatory?
Unfortunately, I did lose all of my columnar cacti due to the bad cold snap we did experience in early February 2011. I could not believe, that it would get this cold here and left the plants in the ground. Now I wish I had taken a knife and cut the tops off and moved them indoors. Then I would have had a chance to root then and by now they would be established once again. Well, sometimes I am just not thinking straight.
