Looking - Tephrocactus Geometricus

Post by Joel143 »

For a while now I've been searching for this cactus without any luck. I had one many years ago but lost it due to improper care while I was overseas. Seems this one is not an ordinary cactus that is openly marketed. Thought i would place a post and see what comes.

Not common even from specialists. Doesn't make a lot of flowers and germination isn't always high. Mesa Garden has them listed, but not cheap and they won't be huge.

I've had decent luck with mesagarden's T. geometricus seed.
I don't know why this plant is rare. I haven't managed to kill mine, it flowered last year (but didn't make new cladodes) and this year it's growing at least 4 flowers/pads.

I sowed these guys in my GH 2 years ago:

Bought this as a thumb sized seedling 2.5 years ago:

I've tried growing from seeds but growing from seeds is my down fall. I don't have the luck. Now seedling on up to larger plants its no problem. Will just have to keep my eyes open for seedlings or a cutting. I think thats the only way I will find me one again.

He's a bit steep...but, since no one else seems to have them, maybe it isn't unreasonable...but, Cactus Specialties has them available (and I know some folks that have gotten it from him, and were quite pleased!):
