Hello Christos,
that is an amazing images of a huge Echinocactus. Was the plant injured a long time ago and decided to put out all these offsets? I have never seen a clump like this before. This massiv specimen must be older than I am.

Yes you've got it right. The plant was damaged at the apex, many ...decades ago, for some reason and ...that happened!
It makes you wonder what nature can do...
I don't know your age but it doesn't matter, you are right on this too.
This specimen is surely older than you, unless you fought at Gettysburg!
