Mammillaria viridiflora in flower

Post by peterb »

I have been wanting to catch a small population of M. viridiflora in flower near Superior AZ and headed out for an overnight a couple days ago, stopped there on the way to the Gila National Forest. Finally caught some flower pics. Interesting plants! Also lots of other pics in this album:

Really beautiful pics, Peter!
The flower variability of viridiflora is amazing. Is there a second Mammillaria species present in this area?
That would explain the different appearance.

Ralf, there don't seem to be any other Mammillaria in this area, but it seems to me that viridiflora is in the wrightii/wilcoxii group and I wonder if maybe it's a relic from some extinct ancestor and wilcoxii. Just speculating.

great pics peter, I would expect green flowers on a plant called viridiflora though...

Yes, good point! apparently, some populations are more "viridiflora" than others. :-)

Lovely pics, lovely flowers and lovely area! We used to live in southern California and travelled often to Arizona just to see the cacti in bloom.

this stretch to Top of The World is very scenic indeed. Beautiful and rare Echinocereus arizonicus in the area also.
