Maybe because those are thorns not spines! Since few of us are botanists here I doubt it really matters, I just couldn't resist.
It's just an "other succulent". Nothing except Lithops really matter ;)

My first time online at cactiguide.com and it's a real eye opener. Something tells me I could investigate
raising cacti as a hobby - currently retired.

L088 is a form of E. pectinatus with quite red spines.
I only have a picture of the flowering plant, so please ignore the flowers

I had 2 plants that had good red spines, so I took a bunch a pics of each, both "dry" and"wet"

The Mammillaria spinosissima didn't really change when wet, so I just took the dry photos

But no matter what I tried, my photos of my Echinocereus rubispinus wouldn't work, they all came out terrible, it's too tall!!
and my camera just fails when it comes to the sharpness it needs for this plant

They spines really did brighten up when wet

I thought seeing the whole plant that I posted for the contest was better

Here's some red spines I spotted in the greenhouse today. A young Echinocereus montanus.
