I know it's a Melocactus, but a lot of them look so similar...

Yes, it looks similar, but matanzanus seems to have a tall cephalium. The one I have seems to be flat.

As far as I know cephalium will grow but cactus will not anymore.

Definitely M. matanzanus. The cephalium on mine has grown over a half inch in the last year, but the body of the plant has stayed static. Pretty handy actually, never need to pot up again!

once a Melocactus gets its cephalium it stops growing the green flesh of the plant. Instead the cephalium continues to grow and can get much larger. So the cephalium starts out and grows taller.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
