Melocactus ID
Melocactus ID
I know it's a Melocactus, but a lot of them look so similar...

Melo matanzanus.
Re: Melocactus ID
Yes, it looks similar, but matanzanus seems to have a tall cephalium. The one I have seems to be flat.

As far as I know cephalium will grow but cactus will not anymore.dw0rk1n wrote:Yes, it looks similar, but matanzanus seems to have a tall cephalium. The one I have seems to be flat.

Definitely M. matanzanus. The cephalium on mine has grown over a half inch in the last year, but the body of the plant has stayed static. Pretty handy actually, never need to pot up again!
May you never be spineless!

Re: Melocactus ID
once a Melocactus gets its cephalium it stops growing the green flesh of the plant. Instead the cephalium continues to grow and can get much larger. So the cephalium starts out and grows taller.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
Re: Melocactus ID
Thank you! It will be exciting to watch how it grows.
