Trichocereus huascha cristata by any other name...
Trichocereus huascha cristata by any other name...
The label on the pot says it's a Trichocereus huascha cristata.
I'm new to the whole name game. I pretty sure "cristata" means crest. But when I try to look up this guy I get redirected to "Echinopsis" or "Echinopsis huascha."
Is there a clear answer as to what this is... or is it a case of it being a cousin of a cousin of a cousin's relative's uncle thing.... So many varieties it's hard to nail down?
Thanks in advance for any replies,
Brian

The trichocereus genus was lumped into echinopsis so echinopsis huasca is a synonym for it I believe.

I've seen that plant before!
Anyway, it doesn't matter if you use Trichocereus or Echinopsis, it probably is an Echinopsis crest of some sort, but unless it reverts to "normal" growth you'll probably have to run with the name it came with. In other words, you identify crests based on the plant they came off of.

were the Trichos merged with Echinopsis or the other way around? I can't remember. Either way, it really doesn't matter which you use since they are both synonyms. The Cristata does mean crested or cristate. (the A is added to the end of it to Latinize it to match the huachua )
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.

A bunch of other genera were merged into Echinopsis - Trichocereus, Lobivia, Chamaecereus, and a number of less familiar ones.
