opinion needed - Mammillaria
Hello everyone,
3 weeks ago I had to cut a Mammillaria (don't know its species), due to a wood rot.
I cutted the cactus with a disinfected knife (I used the ethyl alcohol), after each cut I disinfected the knife again. Then I removed the offsets.
The cuttings were these:
These were the offsets:
I immediately placed the offsets on the soil and slightly watered the soil from the bottom (I simply placed the small pot with the offsets in a larger one with the water) so that the soil was just a bit moist.
I waited few days, until the cuttings were well dry, then I placed them on the soil (about the water I did the same as I did with the offsets).
The offsets are taking root YAY the cuttings not yet
Did I make some mistake with the cuttings? I simply have to wait for they take root?
One of the cuttings has some buds, will it lose them?
Are the offsets ok in a pot like that? Can I leave them there even after they have all their roots?
I need your opinion even about this plant..it's the same Mammillaria as the cuttings above, I mean the same plant, I simply not cutted it because it seemed not much damaged. What do you think about it? The pictures have been taken 3 weeks ago. Today their buds are puffed up, it seems they'll explode
Thank you in advance.

Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
FYI, I would have let the cuttings dry for at least 3 weeks before planting. The offsets I would have taken off without cutting them off and if they were cut off, I would have waited just as long to plant.
Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
I only can take a note of what you write and do it the next time I need to cut a cactus. Sadly now it's too late In any case I hope it will go well this time....it's the first time I cut a plant

get the cuttings out of the soil if it's wet. Any plant matter that is wet and isn't rooted will rot. I usually let things dry for 1-2 weeks before I do anything with them at all.
Here's to you, all you insidious creatures of green..er I mean cacti.
Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
The soil is dry now, have I to get the cuttings out anyway? However to be precise, before I said 'few days' but I waited for 7 days before placing the cuttings on the soil, the plant is small and healed soon..

Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
Every spring i always do alot of cuttings, pup pulls and such i always let my cuttings dry for 2 weeks befour potting up in dry soil mix, the pups you dont need to cut off most the time they will just pop off or you can twist them off they get potted up in dry soil mix i dont water anything for awhile. Sometimes ya get lucky and the little pups put out tiny roots while there still atached to the mom plant but i still would pot them up in dry soil..

Hi Barracuda
Well, next time I'll wait 2 weeks then and won't water anything for a while. I'm sad now because I slightly watered them and I'm also worried about that because I could have caused another rot...the reason for I cut them was a rot and now I could have caused another rot! This is crazy!!

Update
The offsets now have the roots and are growing
The cuttings have different situations. In my first post I identified 'first cutting' and 'last 2 cuttings'. Well, about the 'last 2 cuttings', one is dead without any root, the other has roots and is ok.
The 'first cutting' has less roots than the other but now has a problem: an unidentified insect ate a little part of it and now it has a little hole on the basis
The insect leave a strange transparent substance in the place where it has been, a substance like the one left by the snails when they move.
The same insect, obviously not happy enough, tried to eat my Cereus spegazzini 'Wild Crest' also The cutting with the hole seems to be ok but I need your opinion about it please.

Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
snails probably eat your cactuses
Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
Snails eat cactuses? Really? How they can move between the spines?...oh well, this isn't important.
How can I prevent another 'attack'? Thank you Milos

Re: opinion needed - Mammillaria
Could be slugs instead of snails. They can move through spines better. Leave a dish of beer outside. They'll drown in the beer. Also, you can go out at night with a flashlight and catch them eating your plants.
