Contest 79 : Dicussion and related Pictures

Post by Jens »

This is the place to discuss all the Macro- and Close Up shots that were being entered and also talk about Macro Photography in general.
Have fun with this one too.

Good start of the contest . Those two pictures allready show the range of this month topic. If you go close enought we will get a competley different view of our favourites.
Unfortunately with this lens (40mm), this is about maximum enlargement, but it still makes an interesting view of the tiny Epithelantha flower

I definitely think that the entries should show us these plants in a way that we normally don't see them when just looking at them on a bench, whether it be flowers or the plant itself. Here was my second choice, Adromischus marinae ssp. herrei. I didn't use it because part of it is slightly out of focus.

Depends what you mean by how we don't normally see them? Do you mean how most don't normally photograph them close up, as below:-

I think we shouldn´t draw the line between close up and true Macro Photography too closely. Your great picture of R. heliosa also shows some features of the flower one wouldn´t normally notice with plain sight.

He isn't. He is more like a straw plant, but his brother is much more like succulent.

Dave W, I don't make the rules so don't pay too close attention to what I say! I was just giving my opinion that to me "close up" means looking at something in a closer way than standing arms length from the plant would let you do. That could be magnified or macro view, or it could be just simulating what it would look like if you bent down to look at the plant from a foot or two away.

That being said, if you had entered that stigma closeup it probably would have had my vote! That's a beautiful shot.

I had fun posting about 6 possible choices to Facebook and asking my (mostly non-cactus) friends to pick one. The zacatecasensis got the most votes. Here were the other candidates. My personal favorite is probably the Sclerocactus parviflorus or maybe the Echinomastus johnsonii.
