Is there anywhere in the U.S to source seeds from? or anyone growing this species with a plant or two to share?

Haven't heard of a red-flowered strombo, but I've tried to find one for sale, even single seeds, in the US for corregidora and failed.....So I would like to know as well!

Strombocactus disciformis subsp. esperanzae is the red flowerin variety.

i like the strombocactus sp but those spines on the corregidora are just so appealing to me. it seems europeans get first dibs at all the cool cacti.

Forgot about that subspecies, was thinking of Obregonia for some reason.But yes, I ordered some of those seeds from MG this year, they give you 20-30 per packet, but the seeds are like sand!

Did you get any to sprout?

Yes, at least 5 are still alive, but I probably could have saved more.

Malej Jarda lists those seeds, but often they take a while to respond to emails and fill orders. As far as I remember they take PayPal.

No problem usually importing most seeds, but importing plants internationally runs up against CITES problems. In fact CITES has made it virtually impossible to legally import plants for amateurs (apart from international trade within the EU), plus the nurserymen don't usually want the trouble of obtaining all the required paperwork to export either.

I obtained some S. corregidorae seed from the above last year, but have not set it yet. I also got plants of S. jarmilae (= S. disciformus f. minimus) and S. pulcherrimus (= esperanzae) the red flowered one mentioned above from them previously.

Admitted a lot seem to come in through E. European sources, but the real advantage of the European Union countries is we can import and export between the 28 different member nations without all the CITES and import duties hassle. Plus there are a lot of good seed raisers within the EU selling their spare plants.

However you could always persuade Obama to join the EU, then you would have no problems importing plants! Stay out of the Euro though if you do!

Not in the US, but you can order these seeds from the Czech Cacti Growers Club Kaktusy Hradec Králové (http://www.kaktusyhk.cz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).
I have ordered a few times with them, and have good experience (although you might need to wait a while). It is the only source for these seeds that I know of.

Well it's been a year since I asked, so are there now more available resources to obtain this wonderful cactus? Also does anyone know if it is self fertile/sterile?
