The only Dutch living cactus.

Post by hablu »

Every year he searches a sleeping place for winter in my garden. Can you see what it is? Harry

Is that a Spiny Hedgehog? Are they native to that area?

Cool!

Yes, a hedgehog. They live here; you don't see them that often (mostly only dead ones on the roads), because they are nighthunters. This one makes a winternest for the third year in my garden. Stays there till halfway march. His food is worms, mice, insects and all kinds of fruits. I think it's an honour he chsooses our garden. Harry

Does someone have a Pangolin living near or around? :) Well, we call Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus a Pangolin cactus (or in Swedish "Myrkottskaktus") and I didn't know that this animal was for real

I see those here too. Very friendly creatures. One ate the eggs of my chickens here, I gave it some milk (they love that!) and it returned about a week later with its whole family! They're not as prickly as cacti though :P

Don't give hedgehogs milk - they are lactose intollerant. It makes them ill. If you feed them, give them catfood.

Tony, most of us here in the UK, probably in Europe too would be delighted to find these when weeding. We love 'em :)
