my Astrophynum Senil died during the winter. I've never had a cactus die on me that quickly. Not uncommon for me to lose a cactus during the winter. 1st week January all is well and I give a smige of water, like all my cacti and 3 weeks later it is dead and shriveled up.
RIP little guy.

Astros don`t like any water during winter resting. Or maybe it wasn`t dried enough from last season.
Well, unfortunately that usually happen with the most beautiful piece in collection...

I have another Astro that I've had for several years and I water it occasionally during the winter and it gets along fine. The nusery told me he thinks the roots had some kind of problem. As I understand it a cactus that looks like it is fine could have a problem with roots or be infected, weakened and you cannot see it. During the winter months of dormancy is when the cactus is succeptable because it is in a weaken dormant state. That is the high risk time for the cactus to die if it is sick. It died so quickly I was stunned.

AgavaSK- I did a little research and you are correct. The Astrophynum Senil is supposed to stay perfectly dry during the winter.
Perhpas I'll get another and try again.

I got another Astrophynum Senil to replace the one I killed.
I took the advice and kept it compleatly dry this past winter and the cactus is doing fine this spring.
