How long does it take to get to that size in your climate? It takes about a year here in our tropical climate.
My friend from another forum says he has ones that flowers within a year and a half. With heavy fertilizing and heavy watering during summer time. I didn't tried it yet, but have an intention to. My this years seedlings (3 weeks old) are now (biggest ones) about 5 cm tall. :D They are in an icubator on 12 hrs per day light.

Those Tephro. geometricus seedlings are FAT, but I think that's normal for them. Looks like everything's going great. :)

We'll see if it makes any difference. :?

Standing in water? That's not a technique I would use, leaving them like that in a bag. The soil gets wet, not moist. Might be risky... I always place the pot in some water, let excess water drip out and then put the pot into a bag. Sounds a bit safer. But then again, your wet method might work.

I'm thinking this is a "language" thing, Aiko. I might be wrong, but pictures are telling 1) soaking in tub; 2) bagging & nuking(? - altho no mention of nuke); 3) add seeds after cooling? Is this what you did, Maja? :-k

Well. Standing in water means soaking up, yes.

No nuke this time, becouse I got a finished mix from Zvone just the way he sows into, and he doesn't nuk - ever.

But Aiko is right. They are standing in water in their baggies , which I will correct as soon as I get home from work.

The "no nuke"(or not baked) would be a serious concern to me, Maja, unless all the ingredients were pre-sterilized. But even in the process of sitting out soaking allows dust/contaminants to settle on surface before seeds placed & baggies closed!

Maja, are you going to be a new supplier for nursery Astrokaktus? :D

I also didn`t nuke the soil and I open the glas from mini GH every day to sprinkle water on seedlings :-k

Well Simona. Nobody nukes the soil in their natural hanitat, does it???? Image

Peter no offense. But I think sometimes we DO complicate things too much, don't you think????Image

Definitely, but I'll let you use your "guinea pigs" & report your results. Seedlings in the wild also don't have 100% humidity for 6 - 10 months -- which is why some people like to "grow them hard" - slower, not very lush, but tough!

I always have a bit of standing water in all my baggies, from Ariocarpus to Thelocactus and many more in between. Plenty of so-called 'rot prone' stuff. Some species need it with the rate that they grow. :P It probably helps that my soil mix is very lean, though. They'll be fine, don't worry about it. :)

'Hardness' seems to be less humidity dependent and more soil nutrient content and light intensity dependent.

OK. Time for a little update.

I sow some Adenium obesum (and some hybrids) Some are small some are big:

But the biggest one is about 7 cm high (in one month):

I even sow some cacti. One od the most obedient kind is the hybrid of Astros Hendry sent:

One species of Tephros did well (while another kind didn't germinate AT ALL):

Bombax did well too:

Those are all 1 month old plants. 8)

Nice progress on those! Since I pretty strictly grow cacti, sometimes I forget how fast other plants can grow! Nice!
