I removed offsets of Obregonia denegrii attached on grafted plants.
4 of 5 cm diameter and 10 of 3 cm diameter as shown on the photo.

Since some of offsets were quite small, I used a special method which was used for the rooting of imported cacti years ago.
Offsets were dried just 5 days and buried in pottingmix, pumice sand.

I have planned to water 1 month after the setting.

How are they doing now?

Only several short roots have been developed.
I can not see any significant effect for the method at moment.
I will keep them until next spring.

Updated information:
They have rooted and grown well except 2 small ones.
These 2 have not died but are not health enough.
The photo is one of good ones.

So now you can tell us that 4 cm diameter is about the minimum size for successful rooting of this species offsets. At least at conditions described above.

So is my experience too: Hard-rooting species set up for rooting in autumn usually wait until next spring or hot weather time, sometimes a year long or more. So the size is important to let them keep their bodies hydratated long enough. Spraying and occasional light watering also help this.

I have been under trial of harder one for rooting, which is an Aztekium hintonii.
The size is 4 cm in diameter.
I set it in September last year, early spring in here.
I will wait until next spring.

I did not pick them up but it seemed they all were rooted.

These cacti are Astrophytum hybrid, hakujou fukuryu banjyaku which I set offsets for rooting last September.
They are in 50 mm square tubes.
All of them have rooted well.
I have to repot them soon.


5 hakujou fukuryu banjyaku were degrafted lately.
I collected 9 offses from them.
They will be set soon for the rooting.

It is still in winter in here but I set offsets in 5 cm square tubes in this morning.

I repotted Astrophytum hybrid, hakujou fukuryu banjyaku posted the photo on 5th July.

After repotted
Roots were developed very well during past 1 year.
This hybrid is mixed the gene of ornatum which may be the reason of the good root development.

I use a same method for Astrophytum and Ariocarpus.

1. Preparation of off-set
Select off-sets which are more than 3 cm in diameter, small off-sets are hard to root.
Cut off an off-set from a mother cactus by a knife, cutting face should be small.
Smaller face is easier to root.
Spray drying medium over cutting face, I use garden lime as the drying medium.
Dry the off-set for 2 weeks, very long drying is not good for the small off-set, 3 cm in diameter.

2. Setting pot
The main mix is 60% pumice sand and 40% organic material.
Top 15~20 mm is pumice sand only, no organic materials.
Water from the bottom of the pot and make a complete wet potting mix.

3. Set off-set up
Push the off-set on the potting mix slightly
Cover off-set over by a tissue paper

Do not touch off-sets, do not check rooting condition
Water from the bottom of pot when the surface of potting mix dried.
