We've been rainy for the last two weeks after over 6 weeks or more of no rain. Yesterday we received 3". Up in West Point, NY they received 8". That's only about 40 miles away.

No rain today but lot of smoke in the air from forest fires.

This the most openness of the flower I saw, it was just for 2 days and these were my work days so photo was taken after 4 pm.
I think at least for this species following conditions have to be true to expect real anthesis: mature plant, high temps, sunny spot and good hydration.

Yes, most times in July.
Positive things: lot of hail water gathered and also natural cuttings to deal with.

The things you learn.Being on Cactiguide.. The size of those hails is impressive, no wonder the cacti splits and you get new cuttings.. We have hail here to in winter sometimes but not that big.

This wild sunflower sharing the pot with one of y Opuntia is setting flowers even with perforated stem...

That is cool. I did not know Leuchtenbergia would produce suckers. Did you do anything to make it sucker? How old is your plant? How do you care for your plant?
I'd sure like mine to sucker. Mine just flowered on Sunday for the first time in many years. It has a second bud coming on. My second plant shows no sign of buds.
