Hana's cacti
Re: Hana's cacti
It is the mid of winter in here. The temperature in greenhouse before sunrise was 5 'C in this morning.
I can not do so much for cacti but I start to prepare for the coming spring. The main job in spring is the repotting.
Seedlings of Ariocarpus grow slowly but I have to repot them when their pots were tight for them.
The photos show 40 seedlings of retusus related species. They are in 6.5 cm square pots but they will move into 8.5 cm square pots.
20 pots are in a plastic pad but 12 of 8.5 cm can accommodate in a pad. As the result, I have to find a space for 1 more pad in my greenhouse.
The actual repotting job will start in September.

40 nice looking cacti!
Re: Hana's cacti
Hanazono; The difference in colour of the ‘wool’ is it a result of ‘outer’ factors as dust/ water or is it permanent on each plant?
I was surprized it got as low as 5 degrees celsius inside the greenhouse in winter. How cold can it get in winter outdoors before sunrise in your area?

Re: Hana's cacti
G' morning Mrs. Green,
It was not so different, just 4.3 'C.
I can see frost 3~4 times per year and so it is almost zero 'C at that time.
There are no snow in here.
Frank

It was 4.4 'C in greenhouse in this morning. Since there was no thermometers outside of greenhouse, I moved the thermometer to outside. How cold can it get in winter outdoors before sunrise in your area?

Re: Hana's cacti
I found one of Astrophytum hybrid which was hakujo fukuryu banjyaku turned the body colour yesterday.
I am not sure when it was started but the colour is abnormal. The body is not soft and seems roots are alright.
Sinc it is mid of winter, I can not do anythings at moment. I have to wait until September.

Re: Hana's cacti
Hi Frank, that's a lot of yellow.
I have Astrophytum myriostigma Fukuryu and tricostatum changed colour, but not that much yellow.
It's amazing how same species, same conditions, some changed colour, some not.

G'morning Bryan,
Frank
I think it did not turn the body colour like this last year. It may start to rot but I will check in September.I have Astrophytum myriostigma Fukuryu and tricostatum changed colour, but not that much yellow.

Re: Hana's cacti
The Astrophytum on photo is a hybrid, myriostigma v nudum cv khoyo x capt-medusae.
I pollinated on many myriostigmas but a few could make fruits in 2010. I sowed seeds in 2011 but Just a few could germinate.
Seedlings were grafted and degrafted later. It relies on own-roots currently.
The cactus has flecking similar to capt-medusae.
I can see some khoyo pattern over the body which comes from the mother cactus.
Although it is old enough, 9cm in diameter, I have not seen any flowers yet.
I need an extension trial but I can not without flowers.

Re: Hana's cacti
Several cacti have been planted on the ground. They were covered by winter weeds and I removed weeds in this afternoon.
The photo is one of them, unknown name.
I bought seeds of Ferocactus-mix and sowed in 2003.
The current location is too shady. I will repot this one in September.
I do not know the name but the cactus is 24 cm in diameter currently.

Re: Hana's cacti
It's amazing they can grow on the ground with wet and cold winter.
I think the spines look like possible Ferocactus schwarzii. Usually Ferocactus schwarzii flower at smaller size, maybe need more sun.

Good morning Hanazono I was a bit surprized to learn that the temps in your area got that far down. Searching on the net, I found out that it even snows in some parts of Australia. Haven’t thought much about it before, but snow and Australia wasn’t the first combination that came to mind.Hanazono wrote: ↑Fri Jul 15, 2022 12:33 am G' morning Mrs. Green,

Saw in another post that you only water with rainwater ( impressive set-up btw) . Is it because the delivered water in your area is no good or are there other reasons?
Re: Hana's cacti
The above mentioned cross between caput- medusae and myriostigma, have you tried it with it the other way around? With a caput- medusae mother?
Re: Hana's cacti
Good morning Frank, I think that is an Echinocactus platyacanthus, nice specimen by the way!Hanazono wrote: ↑Tue Jul 19, 2022 6:09 am Several cacti have been planted on the ground. They were covered by winter weeds and I removed weeds in this afternoon.
