A standard asterias has 8 ribs. Seedings and young plants have symmetrical body shapes.
It is possibly mixed other Astrophytum gene if a seedling had more than 8 ribs.

On ther other hand, some of old asterias are added number of ribs and turned to multi-ribs asterias.

Photo 2: Old multi-ribs asterias, it was 8 ribs when it was young, sown seed in 2003

Just one asterias shows this form in my place, which is shown on the attached photo.

As I described before, a miracle kabuto was crossed with a dream kabuto to increase quantity.
The asterias has fluffy flecking with dream kabuto's pattern which has never occured mutation.
The body shape is a 7 ribs starfish, which gene comes from the miracle kabuto. Current size is 11 cm in diameter and very flat.

Do they have the same parents, all of them? Or rather do the plants in picture nr.1 have the exact same parents? In other words, are they true siblings?
All cacti on the photo No. 1 are rooted off-sets.
My freind gave me seeds and so I do not know the history of seeds.
Since this species, fukuryu was now for me, I grafted seedlings and scion made many off-sets.
Photo 1 is rooted off-sets collected from 4 scions.

And the same for the plants in picture nr.2? Are these true siblings,as in from the same seed pod and with the same father all of them?
All of them were propagated from seeds harvested from my myriostigmas.
Pollen supplier (father) is just one plant(A).
Pollen receiver (mother) are 3 plants(C,D,E).
It is not simple but they are siblings which is different mothers, same father, same grandfather and same grandmother.

Mother of C,D,F is (B).
C,D,F were created by B x A.

A is the grandfather and father of myriostigmas on the photo 2.

Frank

Thank you for the explanation Hanazono 🙂 It is really interesting to see photos of your Astrophytums, both the diversity, beauty and of the older plants. I don’t think I have seen pics before of such big/ tall asterias as the ones in a previous post. May I ask how long you have been interested in/ growing cacti?

G'morning Mrs. Green,
May I ask how long you have been interested in/ growing cacti?
I was born in 1948 and it will be a long story if I told all but I can tell a summary.

My cacti collection was interrupted several times due to mainly relocation of living places.

1st collection was quite short, just for 1 year when I was 12 years old. The collection was Mammillaria mainly.
My school teacher was a cacti collector and I learned how to propagate cati from seed also how to graft cacti frm him.
I forced to stop my hobby because my parent thought study was more important than hobby.

2nd collection was for 4 years. I bought a house when I was 24 years old but it took for 1 hour by train from there to the workplace.
There was a small frontyard. I bought a greenhouse kit and installed. Astrophytum species were included in my collection.
Since my job became too busy, I could not spend 1 hour for travering. I sold the house and bought a house near the workplace. Unfortunately the new house did not have a space to install the greenhouse which was the reason to give up the 2nd collection.

In 1989, I and my family passed over the equator because I was employed by an Australian company.

3rd collection was 4 years. It was a temporary location and I rented a house. I collected small numbers of cacti but I propagated 200 of E. grusonii over there. I donated almost all cacti to a local cacti society just before moving to the current location.

4th collection is current one. I bought a house with a large backyard in 2000 and moved in 2003.
Some grusonii travelled more than 1000 km with me.

I selected 6 Astrophytum hybrid, fukuryu banjyaku for the repotting. Currently they are in 5 cm square tubes but it seems too tight for them. New pots are 6.5 cm square pots.

Photo 1: 6 fukuryu banjyaku in 5 cm square tubes
Photo 2: on of them

I will remove several off-sets from Photo 3 and root in 5 cm square tubes.

It was not zero but I lost just several young miracle kabutos in this winter which means better than last winter. Earlier watering stop may work well.
I took 3 photos of young miracle kabutos yesterday afternoon.
They are young but seeds were sown in 2013. They are around 8 cm in diameter, flowering sizes.
I select good ones in every repotting and they are selected ones as "good miracle kabuto".

Nice Astrophytums. I also lose ( give away or sell ) many cactus every time I had to move but always more replace them. Been in this house since 2012 and it shows so many new cactus now.

G'morning keith,

Thanks for your comment.
I stopped to sow seeds of Astrophytum for a while but I will sow asterias seeds in this year if I could harvest seeds.

The first asterias ( photo 1) I find to be incredible beautiful! How old is this plant? Astrophytums seems to have at least one thing in common with humans- they look better as young.

It is a 6 years old miracle kabuto.
Flecking shapes are similar to petals of cherry flower and areole shapes are similar to rice which is evidence of miracle kabuto.
The mutation of flecking has started shown around the growing point.
