Good morning, Frank!
Beautiful hybrid!
I might try that when they flower again.

Re: Hana's cacti
The COAS hybrid is my favorite Astrophytum hybrid. I currently own only one, but I've got the plants to produce seed (if only my A. asterias Super Kabuto would cooperate).
Re: Hana's cacti
G'morning Bryan & Tom,
Both flowers of coahuilense and asterias are yellow petals and orange throat and so you do not have any hybridization failures.
Asterias including super kabuto do not accept receiving pollen of any other species.
Super kabuto: pollen supplier
Coahuilence: pollen receiver
You have to follow the above rule to make the hybrid.

Re: Hana's cacti
While I've been waiting for my A. asterias to bloom, I've crossed my COAS with A. capricorne and vice versa. The seedlings produced are non-grafted, and as a result are too small to tell if they'll be attractive

G'morning Tom,

An astrophytum, Coahuilense body with spines will be very nice. The seedlings produced are non-grafted, and as a result are too small to tell if they'll be attractive

Re: Hana's cacti
This week is too hot, a bit below 40 'C every day and the room temperter in greenhouse is around 50 'C.
I clean Ariocarpus early in the morning and evening. The main job is removing flower remains, which have to do before the flowering season in this year.
I found two furfuraceus with abnormal tubercles yesterday. They have duotubercles.

Re: Hana's cacti
Beautiful plants! I have a question: Many of my taller astrophytums (asterias) are also developing the indentations towards the middle like the one in the 2nd pic. they now looks like they have a bottom segment and a top segment (only on one side, the other side seems normal). I have given it water, but it never went away. Why is that? The dent is also towards the sun, and the plant is now leaning a bit, so I assume that might be the problem? Curious because some seem to have them, while others don't. They are pretty much all the same age and size
Re: Hana's cacti
G'morning memememe,
A cactus with ribs such as Echinopusis eyriesii can chane the body volume without the skin indentation because ribs can work as same as bellows.
(1). Insufficient watering
(2). Cactus can not keep water in the body because of damaged roots.
Asterias will make skin indentation by above two reasons because it has no ribs.
Asterias makes skin indentation in winter normally becase of (1). It will recover in spring or summer.
(2) is an actual problem. You need to solve the problem of roots.

A cactus can change the body volume which depends upon water volume in soft tissues. Soft tissues can change the volume but skin can not. Many of my taller astrophytums (asterias) are also developing the indentations towards the middle like the one in the 2nd pic.

Re: Hana's cacti
I could not see any cacti flowers in this morning.
The attached photo is a 11 years old Ariocarpus retusus cv Shinkawa Tama Zouge, in a 12.5 cm square pot.
It is a 2nd generation plant in my place. Seeds were harvested from my plants. Around 20 plants have survived, which seeds were sown on same day.
They will be in flower mid of March.
