That is good advice and I think that's what I'm going to need to do. I suspect I am now watering them not enough, as I've certainly over-watered in the past with poorly draining soil and caused rot (I think that was the root cause of the rot). My watering behavior probably mimics a pendulum swinging to the extremes. With an experiment like you described, I should be able to dial the soil and water in. We are headed into spring time here so it would be a great time for this trial.

at the end of the season, let us know the results. Also, I'm interested in what Huernia species do you have.

I wish you could make a thread about your succulent displays too, if that is not extremely difficult for you, I am in LOVE with your displays, I am drooling over the images in this thread. I just wanted to say you are an inspiration to me, thank you for sharing and I wish your plants thrive in your care always!

Well, maybe I could post my displays here in this thread… there is no need to create another one. Possibly next I’ll do that, with some tips included. Sorry, DesertSun, I've never started this thread... but there are some pictures below.

I’m changing most of the plants to square plastic pots. As others did, I’ve noticed that many of the plants, cacti about all, do much better in plastic pots (as long as you give them the right substrate). Also, square pots save lots of space.
On the other hand, some plants fits better in clay pots, such as big cacti, Euphorbia, Pachypodium. As for Mesembs, I have had good (and bad) results in both kind of pots.
I imagine that in the future I’ll have much more plastic pots than clay pots, but I’m sure I’ll keep some of the plants in clay pots.
Here are some pictures of the collection in autumn/winter 2018. Temperatures here are around 12C at night and 25 during the day. That’s our winter.

Obrigado! My Mesembs are in pure grit, when in plastic pots. When in clay pots, the mix will have 75% grit, 25% sandy soil and/or charcoal and /or dry leaves.
