at the end of the season, let us know the results. Also, I'm interested in what Huernia species do you have.Vipassana wrote: ↑Thu Mar 01, 2018 10:47 pm That is good advice and I think that's what I'm going to need to do. I suspect I am now watering them not enough, as I've certainly over-watered in the past with poorly draining soil and caused rot (I think that was the root cause of the rot). My watering behavior probably mimics a pendulum swinging to the extremes. With an experiment like you described, I should be able to dial the soil and water in. We are headed into spring time here so it would be a great time for this trial.

Re: My greenhouse and plants
Thank you, DesertSun, for your kind words. Good to know that my thread serves to something besides my narcissism. I am myself also inspired by others, so sharing pictures is a good thing. Well, maybe I could post my displays here in this thread… there is no need to create another one. Possibly next I’ll do that, with some tips included. Or we could create a new thread called “Show your displays here” and everyone would be welcome to post pictures.DesertSun wrote: ↑Thu Mar 01, 2018 8:25 pm Hi mmcavall! I wish you could make a thread about your succulent displays too, if that is not extremely difficult for you, I am in LOVE with your displays, I am drooling over the images in this thread. I just wanted to say you are an inspiration to me, thank you for sharing and I wish your plants thrive in your care always!
Re: My greenhouse and plants
Thank you so much! The "Show your displays" sounds awesome! And that way you will have your cacti thread left for your collection and the other one for the displays. I'm already thrilled!

Re: My greenhouse and plants
Sorry, DesertSun, I've never started this thread... but there are some pictures below.
I’m changing most of the plants to square plastic pots. As others did, I’ve noticed that many of the plants, cacti about all, do much better in plastic pots (as long as you give them the right substrate). Also, square pots save lots of space.
On the other hand, some plants fits better in clay pots, such as big cacti, Euphorbia, Pachypodium. As for Mesembs, I have had good (and bad) results in both kind of pots.
I imagine that in the future I’ll have much more plastic pots than clay pots, but I’m sure I’ll keep some of the plants in clay pots.
Here are some pictures of the collection in autumn/winter 2018. Temperatures here are around 12C at night and 25 during the day. That’s our winter.
Matucana madisoniorum. Surprise: white-cream flower.
Young Pachypodium horombense:
Pachypodium lealli v. saundersii
Another Pachypodium (aquired as bispinosum, but I’m not sure, maybe P. succulentum?):
Mammillaria plumosa:
Miscelaneous:
Young columnars:
Euphorbias:
Carpobrutus edulis:
Mesembs:
Kalanchoe eryophylla:
Euphorbia x aggregata

I love the carpobrotus container!

The settings are awesome like all of them. Seems as it was taken naturally and you selected the nice view from the wild. Im in awe to your collection and skills. This is on top level I must say. Keep it going!

Thanks Elie! Rocks in the display were added by my 6 years old son. I liked it, too!
Thank you, Arthur, for your kind words. I'm changing several plants to plastic pots, but comments like yours encourage me to continue with the displays.
Re: My greenhouse and plants
OMG, your collection is astonishing, those succulents and cacti and the displays, magical, like little desert landscapes! Thank you again for sharing!!!

Thank you, DesertSun, for your kind and encouraging words!
I'm leaning towards plastic pots, in the name of plants' healthy. Today I reported some: But I think I will manage to conciliate nice displays to plastic pots. Some of the work of the day :

Your collection's gorgeous, hope I get something like that going soon for me...
What are you using as your go-to mesemb substrate?
Cheers!!

Obrigado! My Mesembs are in pure grit, when in plastic pots. When in clay pots, the mix will have 75% grit, 25% sandy soil and/or charcoal and /or dry leaves.

The mesembs are doing fine in that hot weather, at the looks of it!
