Re: WANTED - variety of species
That is quite the list! I'm impressed you have collected most of them. Just curious, are you collecting them for academia/conservation on behalf of ASU, or is this purely a passion project?
That being said I don't think I could help you with expanding such collection, as I'm still a total novice. I would love to see some pictures of your collection for sure!

I suck at identification
Re: WANTED - variety of species
Thanks! I'm at University of Arizona rather than Arizona State . I'm a PhD student in ecology down here in Tucson, and after I graduate (years away) I am hoping to start a conservation non-profit. My goal is to have all cactus taxa in cultivation by 2023, and I'm starting with critically endangered species (just to prioritize somehow). I also want my non-profit to serve as a gateway for taxa unknown in cultivation to be shared with the cactus hobby world as a whole, which should alleviate wild collection pressures in some cases.MagiCarpus wrote:That is quite the list! I started as a novice about 15 years ago, when I was still living in Belgium. I have an old, old account on here actually - just read through my old posts the other day and I gotta say, I've come a ways. So all you need is time! I'll definitely post some pictures soon!

Re: WANTED - variety of species
I'm pretty new to the hobby, so I'm afraid I can't help with any of the ones you're missing either; but I really like your goal. A little while back I read through The Cactus Family by Anderson, and I noticed a number of very interesting cacti that seem impossible to find in cultivation. I have wondered how one would locate sources for such species; if your future non-profit does the hard work, that would be very nice!mdpillet wrote:I'm a PhD student in ecology down here in Tucson, and after I graduate (years away) I am hoping to start a conservation non-profit. Re: WANTED - variety of species
Definitely! Many rare species are cultivated, but some people really like keeping their rare species rare!mikej wrote:I'm pretty new to the hobby, so I'm afraid I can't help with any of the ones you're missing either; but I really like your goal. Re: WANTED - variety of species
There is also a reason why some species are rare, or just a bit hard to come by. I try my best to produce seeds of some of my more rare plants. But that does not always goes so well. I have only managed once to get some Euphorbia bupleurifolia seeds. And that was only eight of them. And I am still waiting for my adult Muirias to finally flower...

The nomenclature you employ does not align with that at http://www.theplantlist.org/1.1/browse/A/Cactaceae/

Re: WANTED - variety of species
Thank you James. I use Joel Lode's taxonomy, based on his Taxonomy of the Cactaceae, published in 2015. I don't believe this has been generally accepted yet. I like his work because he relies very heavily on existing molecular studies, which to me are the most reliable. You can find his addendum summarizing synonyms and recognized taxa here: http://cactus-aventures.com/Taxonomy_of ... errata.pdf. The books are a bit pricey, but I highly recommend them.jp29 wrote:Michael:

Michiel: Yes , I am familiar with Joel and his work. It is just that I use the Plant List now in conjunction with Hunt and in consequence I have to keep cross-referencing the specific names you use because many of them are listed as synonyms in my references.mdpillet wrote:Thank you James. James, I think you make a good point. I will add a column for common synonyms soon.jp29 wrote:Michiel: Yes , I am familiar with Joel and his work. Re: WANTED - variety of species
ADBLPS http://adblps-graines-cactus.com/commander.htmllists seed of Mamm. albiflora as well as a few varieties of some of the other species you list.
Re: WANTED - variety of species
Thanks! Aymeric and I have traded a few species, but he was sold out of the albiflora before I ordered. He's got a great selection!esp_imaging wrote:ADBLPS http://adblps-graines-cactus.com/commander.htmllists seed of Mamm. albiflora as well as a few varieties of some of the other species you list.
