Photo size reduction

Post by stefan m. »

Ive noticed that the system now only allows photos 500kb or under to be auto converted to less than 100 kb.
its making uploading photos difficult. I have reason to believe that the photo crisis in december may have something to with it.

The maximum size has always been 500kb. There were no recent changes on the adminstrator's controls.
The december problem was due to malfunctions on cactus mall server's end and not on cactiguide. There is plenty of space left free on the cactiguide server.

Not much quality under 500k. That's why I often post links to photos uploaded to other sites.

BTW: how do you guys enter the forum these days? Index page & board Index don't work, blaming some rodents for that... No activity today...
??

Code: Select all

--> do we have another portal or what? I used history links to recent topics today. 8)

This "back door" also works: http://cactiguide.com/forum/search.php? ... nreadposts

I have the same experiences as you, and have also been accessing the Forum using a “back door” link.

This ones under 500k, in fact a 97k image when I uploaded it. A computer screen only has the resolution of about a 4 Megapixel camera, so no matter how many megapixels your camera has that's all the resolution you will get onscreen, therefore extra large files are usually of no advantage since all that extra resolution is wasted. If you go in for digital projection to clubs it is even worse since most digital projectors have not much more than 1 megapixel resolution.

I think it has more to do with the amount of sharpening you apply to the image either in camera or in post processing for web use that makes the difference. I usually shoot RAW and all images are sharpened in post processing.

On some cameras if you use in camera JPEG's you can increase the sharpening in the camera, but you usually have to go into the menu to do this, so read the manual.

Accutance is what fools our eyes into thinking the image is sharper than it really is:-

"Now, resolution can't be artificially increased: detail that isn't recorded can't be pulled out of thin air. However, accutance can. This is what unsharp mask does: it increases the brightness differences between adjacent areas. As long as the detail was captured (i.e., the tonal difference was above the absolute minimum that the system can record), it can be "brought out".

For those who want to take it further see this link. Note the "Halo" on the roof of the buildings etc (the white line) on the bottom section of the crane photo. If you start getting these white edges around parts of your image you are oversharpening (they are often called oversharpening halo's) and need to back off your settings until they disappear.

You will get many recommendations for unsharp mask settings and nothing is correct for all images. This was a starting point a good close-up photographer gave me for Unsharp Mask, Amount 80, Radius 1.0, Threshold 8 and then vary it as needed from there.

I always apply sharpening as the last thing before saving the image for the web.
