But I buy the argument.
Thanks! N.

It’s taking a long time to root itself back to health. I pull it out of its pumice pot and check it once a year and it’s just scratching by on its old root knuckle. No growth, above or below the soil line.iloveu3000 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 1:28 pm Hi DWdogwood !

But it did put out one flower this year, so it’s holding on.

I dug all of the dead wood out to the fresh root knuckle, which appears to maintain a number of viable nodes.
Also found several hangers-on of the tiny yellow fungus balls in the litter. Not harmful in themselves but indicative of the heavily organic prior mix that started this mess in the 1st place.
A dust with sulphur then back into a shallow pan of pumice for another season.

They last a long time even without roots pretty amazing.
Re: Copiapoa solaris first flower
Sometimes an old and hard callous may stop roots emerging, therefore it's best to peel it off and let a new thinner callous form it can then root through.

Hi DW !DWDogwood wrote: ↑Sat Oct 08, 2022 11:45 pm Well I just pulled it out, and there were a few feeble roots, but they seem to be abandoned as soon as they start.

Still, it’s given me a few offsets over the years that are now nice specimens in their own right. Degrafted.
