Growth Over Time - Echinopsis hybrids

Post by WayneByerly »

In November of 2016, after having seen several photographs of its flowers, I bought an Echinopsis oxygona (an Easter Lilly Cactus), and as a "Free Gift" got a pair of Echinopsis hybrids. And I thought I would do another one of these "Growth Over Time" postings so that the members here could see their phenomenal growth rates.

All Measurements are in mm. There are two of them, and I just refer to them as 1) and 2). This really and truly irritating picture system is turning my pictures sideways again, and I have NO control over that. My apologies.

When I first got these cacti, they were literally, only the size of grapes, and had NO roots at all as they has JUST been cut from the parent cactus.

In one years growth (well, 15 months) they have tripled in size. #2 already has a pup of its own.

These cacti were so small when I got them, and they are still very small, I just don't anticipate them flowering for several years. My Echinopsis oxygona however has two buds on it, and I am extremely anxious for it to flower. If I were desperate to see flowers though, all I'd have to do is visit your Journal. And I could see all of the flowers that I needed to see you there. :D

Wayne - nice healthy-looking Echinopsis hybrids. I've had some of my Echinopsis flower at that size, or slightly larger; keep in mind that I have much larger ones that have yet to flower. I suspect it depends on a variety of factors, such as hybrid type, optimal conditions for that particular hybrid, attitude of the plant (I find that some are just plain stubborn), etc. I wouldn't be surprised if you have flowers next season. Good luck and post pics as the plants grow.

Here's a six month update on these two cacti. The growth rate on these is truly exceptional. From 11/26/2016 to 06/08/2018, One of the pair has gone from 22mm (H) x 22mm (W) to 76mm (H) x 79mm (W). Ohhhh ... I put a dime in this most recent picture ... just like in the first. Compare the first picture to THIS picture. See the dime? Either American coins are VERY much smaller than they were a year and a half ago, or these Echinopsis hybrids have done a bit of growing...

... and it even has its own offset. Here's a closeup. It's bigger than the original hybrid and the spines are thicker too!
