Best cacti field guides

Post by Nopaltzin »

Hi everyone :D

I was just wondering whether anyone would be able to recommend any comprehensive field guides on the cacti of Latin America ? I'm interested in field guides of any sub region whatsoever , but particularly interested in Brazil as will be going there soon to a very cacti rich area for fieldwork but also Mexico , the Andean region and Argentina. Is there any popular field guides for these plants which are standard for hobbyists or botanists/ biologists ? :-k

Much appreciated \:D/

Thanks

There are some downloadable ones I know of, but if it comes to actual localities collectors are loath to give details and particularly GPS coordinates to people they do not know due to habitat stripping or misuse of plants. You really need to go with somebody who knows where the plants are. The problem can also be that the local botanists, unless they really specialise in cacti, do not usually know the habitats as well as many amateurs who specialise in the various genera.

Some of my friends who visit habitat regularly had to show the national botanists where the plants actually grew. Even in the National Parks the Rangers had passed within a few feet of them on the road and did not know existed there until amateurs pointed them out to them. Sometimes habitats are well hidden and also scattered over a fairly large area therefore you can spend hours looking for something you know should be there, which is why somebody who knows the locality is best to go with.

For Chile.
