Myrtillocactus Cuttings

Post by Cloudless »

I posted about my Myrtillocactus in the sick forum, since then I've taken several cuttings of healthy sections an inch or two in length. I let them callous over a week, and now they're sitting upright in pumice and turface. My question is, now what? I've read everything from mist, slight watering, no watering, etc, there seems to be a lot of conflicting info out there.

I would water after a week. It worked well with a P. pringlei cutting I rooted recently. Some say that water triggers root growth (non-scientifically proven).

When you say water, do you mean just a bit at the bottom, or a soaking?

I would bottom water short of soaking it.

I used periodical moisture, water and it takes several months in my conditions to root Myrtillocactus cuttings. Keep it warm and shaded spot. This cactus is drought tolerant so it withstands long time needed to root without problems. I did not check it for roots: When it once expended after watering I new the result and transferred it into permanent soil mix & pot.

It may take some more time until it starts growing on the top because it needs to develop more normal root system first. Water it carefully in first weeks and do not use too big pot.

Does it need a certain temperature range to root?

These are top-end cuttings only. What they do with the rest of stems or they just trim some big cacti?
I bought my plants potted 3 in a pot so that's why: they had too many cuttings and less pots...

Between 70 & 95 F will be fine.

My previous cuttings never did take, but one I did this summer finally did! Will have to repot to a better mix soon. I've read myrtillocactus could use a bit more organic than some types?

As a fast growing large cactus it has to tolerate good range of soil types. Up to 30 - 50% of the mix is maybe OK for a potted one.
