A friend gave me a dragon fruit cutting.
It has some roots, but they're not on the main stem.
Is it ok if I plant it like that or should I prepare the main stem?

Re: Dragon Fruit cutting
You can plant it just like that - stick the roots into some free draining mix and you should be set!
On another subject, that doesn't particularly look like a typical dragon fruit plant. Most dragon fruits come from members of the Hylocereus genus, usually Hylocereus undatus. There are some others such as Selenicereus megalanthus, but I do believe the plants look similar.

Most likely: Stenocereus cutting.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Plant it as is and grow it out to ID the species.the origin of th eplant might give clues to what it is. I am most familiar wih H. costaricense which is 3 winged and has different spines.
Re: Dragon Fruit cutting
By the way, this is where it came from.

Re: Dragon Fruit cutting
You might want to post this under Cactus identification to see if somebody can ID the plant. "Dragon fruit" is a common name for the fruit of several species of hylocereus, but other cacti that have large red fruit may also get called dragon fruit or the Spanish names pitaya or pitahaya.
This is a columnar cacti that I don't happen to recognize.

Could be stenocereus stellatus
