WIFI wall outlets are a good idé.
Actually, I have bought a SONOFF (SONOFF® TH16) outlet with an included temperature sensor.
You can control it from your phone and also set a temperature when it will turn the outlet on. It both act as a thermostat and you can control it manually.
I have some big cacti in a remote storage where I need to monitor the temperature, think I will install the SONOFF outlet there.
Raspberry PI or "Arduino" works too but it's harder to get the electrical installation safe.
I use microcontrollers to monitor and send temperature data to a server (Raspberry PI), it's interesting to monitor the temperature during the night.

I never knew these existed! I'm definitely getting one. Thsnks for the tip!
There are more cacti in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
