Root rot?

Post by Meggchris »

I think that this is a Graptopetalum paraguayense, if not please help me identify this lil guy :) However, this is a new succulent I recieved from an activity my dorm had. I've been watching it the past month and 4 leaves have fallen off. Im afraid it has root rot. The other 4 would get pretty mushy towards the ends of the leaf and I could tell they were dying, so when they gave little resistance, I would pull them off. I'm afriad I overwatered it when I first recieved it. I haven't watered it in about a week and a half now. Now one of its leaves have shrivled just at the end. It's still firm, and only collapses when bent inward because it's shrivled quite a bit. Another one of the leaves towards the top looks to be doing the same thing, except the end turned brown first (I have all my succulents near a heater in my dorm because that's where the window is located) the heat may have caused a "burn" on the smaller leaf. I've been waiting to see if the issue would get better but leaves continue to fall. Should I pull it apart and attempt to save it by propagation? Or let it be?

If there's a sign of a new growth and ONLY the leaves at the bottom are dying, it should be fine.

Not root rot. The leaf will not become healthy again, it will fall, but as long as the top is OK it will continue to grow new leaves. Be aware that these plants are very prone to overwatering, so err on the dry side to be sure.

It looks like a graptopetalum bronze? The leaves look very green which suggests lack of light? Try moving it to a sunnier spot. Preferably a conservatory/sun room or south facing window. If you're worried about root rot take it out the pot and have a look for yourself. These plants are happy sat around without their pot for weeks on end so don't worry about having a peep.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My dorm room saddly doesn't face the sun at any time of the day, so I'm thinking about getting a grow light. One more leaf has begun to do what the others have. It's starting to turn kind of dark and the very tip of the leaf is beginning to curl inward. It only has 3 large leaves left so I'm not sure if I just let it do it's thing? I'm hoping the only issue is light.
