I live in Hawthorne, CA it’s about 10 minutes from LAX airport. Zone 10a?C And D wrote: ↑Sat Oct 10, 2020 3:52 pm The cactus on San Clemente Island photos are hard to see
But the long ones are most certainly Bergerocactus emoryi
https://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Bergerocactus
I worked on San Clemente Island a couple times, and the plant is very common there
What is odd is that all the rocks are covered in beautiful thick lichens and moss.
and just across the 26 miles of ocean to the shore all the natural lichens and mosses that should be there are long gone due to air pollution.
Vingames, I have question,
Where do you live?
Please put your location as part of your Avatar
Thanks
Love your collection
Re: My collection
Here’s some more... if anyone sees any seedlings they may want and live in the US I can ship them for prob 9$ and I’ll give them for free. Thanks for looking

Re: My collection
Here’s an echinocereus engelmannii. This is probably my favorite cactus species/genus. This one in particular is seed grown and just as it was about 2 inches tall it got destroyed by mealies and spider mites.. I have an area in my yard I put all those plants as I’m treating them and thing thing took off. It has about 10 heads now and a few more just starting. Can’t wait to see how it goes in the next couple years

Re: My collection
Vincent, beautiful stuff. I was looking through your complete blog and I saw the July 2019 comment on how cactus love the sun. I just moved from Beverly Hills to Indio. My collection was getting sun most of the day in Beverly Hills. And the plants were growing well. But in the 4 weeks of being here in the desert the plants are growing like weeds. Bright Sun and heat.

Re: My collection
Vingames, with your mention of echinocereus engelmannii being a favorite cactus species, I thought I would share a few pics of a specimen I found while hiking in St. George, Utah...5 years ago. I was actually searching for a trough or ditch which had eroded out many dinosaur footprints. After a while I found them.
But this cactus specimen was equally interesting even though I wasn't really into cactus 5 years ago with the exception of about 4 I had at home. Hope yours gets looking this handsome, too.
Next time I get down that way, I'll hike out to this plant and see how it's doing. If it's still there.

Re: My collection
Ya they sure do. I couldn’t really get any turbinicarpus to grow well since I live 3 miles from the beach so I put some in black pots as an experiment and it seemed to help a lot. Also at a lacss meeting a lady from Colorado I believe was explaining how they’ll put big rocks (small boulders) in there outdoor garden to retain some heat from the sun. I’ve also tried this in pots and it seems to work but I’m not sure I’ve only been growing these things for about 6 or so years so still don’t know that muchmikethecactusguy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2020 1:36 pm Vincent, beautiful stuff. Out in the garden today cleaning up some plants and looking for bugs I decided to cleans up these mammillaria fraileana. This has always been a plant I liked since it’s from Baja. I’ve also wondered why I never see it at any shows but now I know. There a pain to keep clean. Second picture is a wolf spider. I have no problem with spiders but these are creepy. They are very good at staring contest but since it probably eats lots of bugs I’ll let it hang out, been around for almost a year now. Third picture is of a seedling thelocactus bicolor. I have some that I’ve grown from seed the “proper way” but this one is from one of the hundreds of seeds I’ve just thrown in the pot and hoping for a sprouter

If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.
