Hylocereus cutting question

I've never grown hylocereus before and had a question. I'd like to root this cutting. As you can see it already has a root growing out of it. But to get it underground I'd have to bury the bottom 6" (15 cm) of stem which seems like a lot

I'm thinking I'll cut the bottom 4 or 5 inches off and then plant both. Having a second one would be huge bonus too

Anyone see a problem with this plan?

I don't see any problem with that plant .Don't bury the plant 6 inches just stick it about an inch or 2 inches deep and give it supports,it will root.hylocereus is Epiphytic cactus so don't treat it like a desert cactus . These type of cacti root quickly

That piece is big enough to make 3-5 cuttings.

Thanks for the advice. Thinking about it now it does make sense to cut it into several pieces. I mean a 17 inch cutting in inch or two in the soil wouldn't exactly be stable. And if it can take being cut into smaller pieces (which apparently it can) then the more the better really

Those look about right. Good-size cuttings, they'll probably all take - as long as you don't plant any of them upside-down!

UPDATE:
All four cuttings rooted and have new growth (two with new growth in November and two this month). Thanks to everyone who responded to my question
