Todays update. Slower growth than previous vines, but this one is much thicker than previous ones.

Hi All and Happy Holidays. An update finally on the dioscorea. It is loving the cold weather. It gotten gown to 39°f at night. I've kept the greenhouse house at 50°f with a nice electric heater and everything is thriving.

Nice deep green leaves and a very full head. The smaller dioscorea to the right also shot up a stem and they have commingled. I think the larger leaves are from the bigger plant and the smaller bunch is from the smaller plant.
Here is a mexicana that I got 12 months ago and it has had this vine for 9 months

Maybe not on topic, but do you have other winter growers?

It can very from around 75°f to 88 °f.

My winters are not what most would call normal. Low has been 39°f but it shoots right back up as the sun moves across to 75 to 88°f . So most of the plants never really get a winter rest.
These 3 Devils tongues started to bloom in early November and this flower opened 2 days ago. They are considerd winter bloomers.

It has been a long time. Over the past 9 months I lost all of the small Dioscorea to the heat. The Mexicana has survives. The Vine from last year finally died off 5 months ago and it popped a new on with in a month. That one tried to grow and it made it to the top shelf and started to open leaves. Then we got hit with a heat wave in the mid 100's f and the leaves just dried up. The vine did not. 2 weeks ago I cut the vine back to the closest live leaf node. 2 days ago that came alive. New growth at the spot I cut it short.

The weather has been mild so I've expecting this vine to grow nice and full.

My original elephantipes when dormant fort the first time since I acquired it. This lasted 3 months. 3 weeks ago we still had temps that averaged 115°f during the day and in the low 90's f at night. Then the Hurricane hit . Temps dropped to the high 80's f during the day and the low 70'sf at night. The cooler weather seems to have stimulated it and this vine has been growing for a week. I'm fighting it as to where it will grow. I move it to the metal rod and 3 hours later it has attached it self to a plant on the middle shelf. this vines move around all day. The Mexicana does not do this. If I move the vine it stays where is placed.

I acquired these 2 Elephantipes a year ago. The grew a vine right awat. It was stunted and the leaf growth was minimal. They went dormant 2 months later. Again, the cooler weather has seemed to stimulated them and its vine growing time again.

Does anyone remember the incident I had with the beautiful Sylvatica and the night I had too much rhum ?. Probably not. Since I killed that one I have been looking for a reasonably priced replacement. 6 months ago I found these 3 on e-bay. Discorea Sylvatica. These look more like an elephants foot much more than the Elephantipes do. I've been babying these since. They only get watered occasionally to keep the roots alive and during the heat I was misting them. It has paid off.
