Sowing seeds into rock wool

Post by Lambda44 »

Hi friends,
In February 2019 I practice sowing cactus seed in rock wool.
My experience is positive because this method is immune to mold.

Interesting. I haven't heard of this used with cactus, but the lack of mold would be a good thing. I know it's used for hydroponic growing. Keep us up to date on your experiences.
Disclaimer: I'm in sunny Arizona, so any advice I give may not apply in your circumstances.

I am from the Czech Republic and I tested this method this year.
I have photos but I have to find a way to share them.
My English is not perfect.
I think this is a great way to grow aztekium ritteri.

Your English is far better than our Czech Lambda!

A friend of mine was in Australia for a time and he told me some cactophiles there sowed seeds in shredded sphagnum moss with some success. I believe they have used it for the "baggie" method too. Presumably you could put it through a household mincer? It probably mimics quite a few cacti that grow in moss on the top of rocks in habitat where their seeds obviously have germinated. No doubt rock wool has a similar effect.

An old badly archived American document. You will need to continue to scroll to read it since it has saved rather disjointedly:-

Thank you for very interesting information.
In the past period I was getting information from facebook. I do not use fb now. I have been communicating with friends from South America about the life of a cactus.
I understand that mountain cactus species need the fresh air of the sun which is not very aggressive.
Many cacti have protect the surrounding vegetation or terrain from sunburn.

Like this:[url][http://mammillaria.forumotion.net/t2578 ... sowing/url]. It seems to much trouble and pimping with smal seedlings for me.

Cheers!

Anyway he used a fungicide to prevent molds. You can see red colored liquid and colored rock wool on the photos - it's a Syngenta MAXIM® fungicide (Fludioxonil with red dye). Seeds and seedlings treatment with MAXIM fungicide is very popular on Ukrainian and Russian cactus growers.

I use only hypermangan solution to disinfect cactus seeds.Using a fungicide when sowing into a rockwool is an unnecessary investment.
the use of artificial light is only important if we want to grow cacti in a short day in areas where the winter is long .for adult cacti, artificial light is unnatural and cost increases.l I have not been using this practice for several years but it was an interesting experience.
This year I sown the seeds of Epithelanta in February and July now it is obvious that the size of the increment is balanced.

Here you can see the results of my cultivation this year.
I also posted part of my collection in this album, now I have limited space for cacti.
Growing cactus is a way for my.Not a profit goal for me.
God bless you :D
