Monstrose F. wislizeni in Saguaro National Park

I was able to spend some time in Tucson last winter and made several visits to Saguaro NP (East). The number, variety and size of the cacti was truly amazing. I wanted to share some pictures of a lesser appreciated plant, Ferocactus wislizeni. Monstrose growth in wild wislizeni isn't terribly uncommon, making it I think one of the few cacti where monstrose growth is frequently seen in habitat. Anyway, here are some pictures

I agree with Shane. F. wislizenii are very common in the Phoenix area. You often see monstrose specimens growing in medians and beside roads. Not sure if the issue is proximity to vehicles, or what causes it. The first plant appears to be both crested and monstrose. I seldom see crested plants, but monstrose are quite common. Once they go monstrose they don't seem to thrive.

I'm not sure why they go monstrose. I'm guessing it starts with something in its genetics. And maybe a disease too, the ones just starting to go monstrose had no clear signs of injury to the area. All these were far from roads, so I'm skeptical that's the reason
The two in the first three pictures both looked like they had some cresting. It looked like there were several forms of fasciation going on with them. Cresting and maybe four different monstrose forms

I'm back in Tucson now visiting family for Christmas. Wanted to share this especially monstrose Ferocactus I saw the other day

It certainly would be in a national park. I think the rules differ for other public lands (and private property too), but I'm really not sure of what the rules are. The seeds from a monstrose plant won't necessarily produce monstrose seedlings anyway
