Can I degraft this?

Post by Shane »

I've never done a degraft before but I'd like to degraft this Mammillaria I bought. Is it possible or would the cut be too big and dry the plant out? I was planning on just slicing it (then letting it callous)

Sure, you can do this. Just make a cut close to the grafting surface and then remove the remaining stock parts, do a second cut deeper if needed. That Mammillaria is big enough to root in coming weeks or months successfully.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Did you buy these from a Polish seller? The Myrtillocactus stock looks familiar. Before slicing, give it a light tug just to see if it might pull off without damage. Before I slice my degrafts, I often check if it can be simply twisted off from the rootstock. Sometimes this lets you save a step in waiting for surfaces to dry, potentially applying antifungals, and applying rooting hormones.

Yes I did in fact. I thought I was buying a normal M. longimamma, and being inexperienced thought that was what was pictured. I'm not sure quite what this is. The seller called it monstrose, but I think it's maybe a hybrid. Pretty cool whatever it is. I don't regret mistakenly buying it. As a side note, I did later buy a nice longimamma for $3 in the LA flower district
