Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
Inspired by these topics, I decided to try to create a monstrose Pereskiopsis. For those not wanting to read the entirety of those threads, here's a summary:
Austrocylindropuntia sublada f. monstrose (ASM) is thought to be infected with a virus which causes its monstrose growth form. Theoretically you could transmit the virus to other cacti via grafting. The newly infected cactus might take on a monstrose form. The results of others' experiments were:
Monstrose growth was induced in various opuntiads (about five results)
Degrafted Pereskiopsis continued monstrose growth (one result)
Degrafted O. compressa did not (one result)
Today I grafted an ASM offset to the bottom of a Pereskiopsis (spathulata) nub. After the graft fuses, I'll graft the ASM end to a Pereskiopsis stock (to induce growth). Here's a picture of the result. Not much to look at yet...
I will post updates as I make progress. Stay tuned

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
This is all news to me. I was not aware Austrocylindropuntia sublada f. monstrose is considered infected with a virus. Would that be any and all examples found for sale, assuming they're all coming from the same parent plant? I'll be following closely to see your results.
Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I believe so. And reversion in ASM is probably from the plant suppressing the virusWould that be any and all examples found for sale, assuming they're all coming from the same parent plant?

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I unwrapped the graft today, to graft it onto another Pereskiopsis (the plan was Pereskiopsis on ASM on Pereskiopsis). The graft fused but I didn't like how the scion looked, so I decided to try again
This time I started with a bigger ASM offset I decided to make it into two grafts. The first was pretty straightforward. I just flat grafted the Pereskiopsis nub (same one as last time) to the top of the ASM offset and wrapped it in parafilm I think I'm going to root this after it fuses instead of trying to graft it again. I'm not 100% decided though
I wanted to flat graft the other piece of the offset (I cut it at the bend) between two Pereakiopsis in one step. I decided this would be too difficult. I instead sliced vertically near the base of the Pereskiopsis and inserted an ASM wedge. Then I wrapped it liberally in parafilm I hope it slid all the way in, but I can't tell theough the p-film. I'm hoping the plants exchange enough sap that the infection spreads to the Pereskiopsis

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
So far the results aren't encouraging. The graft of the cuttings didn't really fuse, and I'm not sure that the insertion fused either
My mistake with the cuttings graft (in the "wrapped graft" picture) was covering the bottom of the stock. I had to unwrap to root it and I think that disturbed the graft too much. I'll cover it over the top this time and just plant it without taking the parafilm off

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
So the result of the insertion was a failure. The inserted asm tissue appears to have fused, then died. Perhaps the virus was transmitted, but I don't see any signs of it
Austrocylindropuntia just seems to be a very hard stock to graft to (at least for me). Previously I did a bunch of experiments grafting to normal A. subulata and though some fused, none survived more than ~10 days (they looked fine for a while then dried up). I tried different amounts of pressure and humidity to no avail

Good morning Shane
What has become of this experiment?
You stop experimenting?
I'm curious to know if there is actually virus in ASM

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I decided to use a larger piece of ASM. I currently have two cuttings a neighbor gave me. They're still in the process of rooting, but when they're rooted I plan to graft Pereskiopsis on top of one. I haven't checked the Pereskiopsis I did the tissue insertion on in a while. I doubt it's gone monstrose, but I'll check tomorrowEdwindwianto wrote: ↑Mon Mar 23, 2020 1:09 am Good morning Shane

I also have a piece of Opuntia monacantha monstrose variegated I plan to do a similar experiment with. I've heard it has a virus as well

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
Hey Shane,
I have graft Opuntia subulata monstrose on pereskiopsis first, then i wil try to graft something on it
The result i got after Grafting monstrose on peres are O.S.monstrose have shape changed and more spines than the natural one
I also graft S.monstrose on opuntia but it is like normal S.monstrose

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I think that's a good strategy, as long as you don't use two tiny pieces of cactus like I did. I successfully grafted a tiny offset of O. monacantha 'Joseph's Coat' (monstrose and variegated, also thought to be caused by an infectious agent) to Pereskiopsis last year to try this. It's just now gotten big enough that I think I can do the next graftJitesh Rana wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 3:41 am I have graft Opuntia subulata monstrose on pereskiopsis first, then i wil try to graft something on it
As for the Austrocylindropuntia, it's also now ready for grafting (it had scale, which I wanted to take care of before I used it as a stock). Hopefully I can work up the courage to try it soon...
I've also been delayed by poor Pereskiopsis growth. It hasn't liked the weather here until recently (believe it hates lows below 50 or 60 F)
I'll post the results of both grafts here

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I'd correct that not virus (it's difficult to get rid of virus infection), but Phytoplasma, and very possible to gain healty apex if plant grows relatively fast. Many so called monstros forms have strong fast growing healthy sprouts free of Phytoplasma. Some years ago I also gained healthy sprouts from monstrose Opuntia ficus indica and Austrocylindropuntia subulata. In the case of grafting infection move to grafted plant and cause monstrose growth.

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
I am thinking of degrafting O. Sabulata monstrose to see if it retain this shape or not
So my qstn is how to degraft should i just pluck off Sabulata monstrose or cut somewhere
and
i have grafted a red spine Opuntia on sabulata monstrose on pereskiopsis 2 days ago I will post an update after it has some growth

Re: Creating a monstrose Pereskiopsis through grafting
Update on Austrocylindropuntia on pereskiopsis
The pereskiopsis which is grafted on {Austrocylindropuntia on pereskiopsis} seem to like have Normal growth for now , idk may be later it have monstrose growth
And another graft red spines opuntia on peres on Austrocylindropuntia on peres. Does not have growth maybe merging failed or Very small part merge
