Shane's seed sowing

Post by Shane »

Been sowing a lot of seeds lately and figured I'd make a thread for it. I recently got some seeds (see viewtopic.php?f=16&t=44142&p=369161#p369161), so there's even more coming. Today I planted:
Cleistocactus samaipatanus
Stenocereus pruinosus
Matucana madisoniorum "Asterium"
Leuchtenbergia principis
Pilosocereus leucocephalus

All are from Phoenix Desert Nursery, except the Pilosocereus, which came from my own plant. Will keep updating with germination and more sowing

Also had a germination this morning of S. pruinosus. Think it germinated only hours before I took the photos

Oh...this is how the M.grahamii looks like 👍
I have never knew...

And a very intimidating cultivation sheet
Cultivation and Propagation: This plant is not famous for being easy to cultivate, but in good conditions with excellent ventilation, it grows without difficulty. It is especially sensitive to over-watering. So careful watering and an open mineral potting soil are a must. Avoid the use of peat or other humus sources in the potting mixture. Don't add limestone to the potting mix, which must be moderately acidic
Well done Shane and good luck 👍👍👍

I also brought some M. grahamii seeds from Arizona and this is how these look wintering at ~ 2 years age:

Good germination, Shane!

Well, done Shane! Now comes the waiting.... the interminable waiting....

As to M. grahamii, it's a local native here in Arizona. I have a few of them (mostly volunteers). I've also found a few laying on the sidewalk. I think dogs go off into the bushes and catch them on their fur or leash and drag them to the sidewalk. They're usually not in good shape, but they come around pretty quickly.

I don't think I've ever grown them from seed on purpose.

They come with "red" spines as shown above and "golden" spines. Identical except for the spine color. "Red" spines are most common in my experience.

In my experience, they generally flower after spring or summer rain. Not watering, rain. Apparently they can tell the difference.
Disclaimer: I'm in sunny Arizona, so any advice I give may not apply in your circumstances.

George: Thanks for sharing. I've never seen any this size (I've seen mature ones in habitat and my tiny ones). What size is your container?

Interesting! Maybe it's the sudden drop in temperature?

#fingerscrossed

Here at Chatuchak market at Bkk...many sellers have L. principis seedling and they are so cheap
So i think, it could be easy to germinate
Maybe, it is just a matter of time now...good luck 👍

The container rim is 6 x 6 cm inside. Those were more in number but lost many from over-watering.
Have others that are under lamps this winter, give them ~30 C daily max. and they will grow continually thirst years.

All of the seeds in my original post have had at least some germination. Here's the complete list of my cactus seed sowing so far this year. Bold indicates germination

Echinocactus grusonii
Mammillaria spinosissima 'Un Pico'
Ferocactus wislizeni- Sowed for grafting experiments. Eight grafted to Schlumbergera 2/22/2020
Mammillaria grahamii
Cylindropuntia imbricata
Bolivicereus samaipatanus
Stenocereus pruinosus- 100% germination
Submatucana madisoniorum 'Asterium'- 100% germination
Leuchtenbergia principis
Pilosocereus leucocephalus- 85% germination

One S. pruinosus seedling appears to be lacking chlorophyll. They were all different of shades of red/pink when they germinated about a week ago. They all went green pretty quickly except one

Hoping to save it via grafting if it is lacking chlorophyll. I'll be watching it
