Damaged plant

Post by Gerbar »

I recently dropped my plant & the tip split and has now hardened into a ceramic like scab on one side. Will I need to ‘debride’ said damage or will it keep growing around the damaged area?

It's hard to know without more details or a photo, but if the tip was killed, the plant will probably keep growing from an areole or leaf axil or other potential growing point nearby (or sometimes from elsewhere, like from the base of the stem).
If the tip wasn't actually killed, it will probably keep growing, so the scar will slowly become less obvious.
If you scrape it off, it will just reform, it's not a helpful thing to do.

Hi
Many thanks for your information, most reassuring.
I have tried to link some photos of the damage but as I am not a ‘Tech’ magician it is proving a problem.
So I will take your advice and keep watching without performing any remedial plant surgery.
Many thanks once again.

The key is getting the images below 400 kb or thereabouts. I size them to 1024 pixels on the longest side and it seems to work for me.

A bird (stupid bird!) pulled one of my tiny Mammillaria sanchezmejorade out of it's pot. I started to look around for it (they don't usually go far). I didn't find it until I moved my feet. It got a little squished, hopefully not too much. All we can do is wait.
Disclaimer: I'm in sunny Arizona, so any advice I give may not apply in your circumstances.

Doesn't work -- the whole reason for picresize.com is to resize the JPGs and download them to your computer first, then add them as file attachments for your posts on the forum.

Looks more as if it got burnt than damaged? Burning can be caused by either be both extremes, either sun burn or cold burn when a plant gets frosted, either way that part of the epidermis is killed.

Anyway no matter how caused if the top is starting to rot you will need to cut it back to sound tissue and cover it with sulphur it possible, or if not just let it callous over. The existing stem will be spoilt but should throw out offsets which you can let grow until large enough (they grow quicker left on the original plant for as long as possible) and later detach and root down a clean plant.

Looks like one of those store bought plants where there are several plants in the same pot rather than a single one clumping. Have you repotted it to see since you bought it? If so you have three undamaged plants already that can be potted up individually.

Thanks Edwin for your kind help, we got there eventually!!
Thanks Dave also for your advice. The plant was bought in a shop for my son, he no longer wanted it so it sits on top of an old TV in our room in plenary of sunlight & has thrived for the last 18 months... then it took a tumble off said TV and landed on its tallest ‘sprout’ splitting it open and slightly bending it about half way down (see photo) it has been left over the winter to see what happened, hence the post here.
Do you suggest slicing horizontally or diagonally?
Thanks in advance
