Growing Bulbine from seed

Post by Shane »

I've been thinking about growing some Bulbine, and am wondering about growing from seed. I understand they require humidity similar to cacti. I'm curious about the difficulty and growth speed

I sowed Bulbine wiesei last year, was not difficult, just took a full two months for the seeds to germinate, needed cool temperatures, and constant humidity. I grew them in an enclosed container, slightly covered in soil (as far as I remember). Once they took off they were rather stable and easy.

Basically not hard to grow. Just be aware they are winter active, of which I am sure you are. If you have some experience with winter active plants, most Bulbines are not hard to grow.

I grew Bulbine narcissifolia from seed (Aiko's, I believe, thanks!) a few years ago, only 1 seed germinated, it grew without problems and is now a healthy flowering plant.
I've tried another of the larger easy species since then with 0% germination. So I find there is a trick to germination, but don't know what it is...
