What's this instrument.

Any ideas to what this might be. Got it from my grandparents

If the level would be 0 when floating in pure water I would guess for measuring alcohol proof figures :-)

My first thought was aquarium thermometer. Did they have tropical fish tanks?

I take my guess back - the scale would be inverted for this :-)

I think it might be an hydrometer, but for things heavier than water, like clay slurries, not for alcohol. Potters use them, also soils and cement people.

Or in confectionary, or just for making syrups :D

teo you are correct the first time. in pure water it will float the lowest. Since alcohol is lighter than water the more alcohol the higher it floats.
